IN THE NEWS: Rare Blackhawks Bourbon Sells for Hefty Price at Auction

If you're a fan of Oak & Oscar, you know we're big bourbon lovers around here. It's in our name, after all! Recently, there's been some interesting bourbon-related news with key Chicago tie-ins!

Forbes reports that an exceedingly rare bottle of Very Very Old Fitzgerald — the double 'very' lets you know it's good! — that was bottled in bond all the way back in the 1960s just sold at auction for a whopping $96,000!

There are a few things that make this an exceptional bottle of bourbon. If you didn't know, the Wirtz family who own the Blackhawks hockey team made their fortune in the liquor distribution industry, and this particular bourbon was one of three private bottlings done for the family back in the 1960s. This 18-year vintage is both the oldest and the highest proof ever bottled under the Old Fitzgerald label.

Speaking to Forbes, Julian Van Winkle III (yes, that Van Winkle) said that he believed "this bottle to be one of the most special bottles of Kentucky bourbon on the planet." Now, that's saying something!

Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Chicago Blackhawks Foundation that benefits underserved neighborhoods through youth programs and other initiatives.
