The Olmsted 38 is a classic, automatic winding, 38mm field watch with a two-layer sandwich dial, 10 ATM (100m / 330ft), screw-down crown, and inner minute track with orange cardinal numeral accents.

The Olmsted 38 takes its namesake from conservationist and founder of landscape architecture, Frederick Law Olmsted – an avid believer in the need of natural public space in society. Olmsted is responsible for designing many of the public parks in the United States; notably, Central Park in New York City, and Jackson Park in Chicago. Throughout a fascinating life, Olmsted pushed for the protection of Yosemite Valley, created the parkway, the integrated park system, and founded the precursor to the Red Cross.

The engine powering The Olmsted 38 is the legendary, Swiss-made, ETA 2892A2, a workhorse calibre with 21 jewels, a substantial 42-hour power reserve, and our iconic 4-star rotor design – a subtle nod to our hometown of Chicago.

    Beautiful watch!

Love the watch, the presentation with two straps and a watch case is a great addition as well. The only downside is the nylon strap is somewhat unnecessarily long. I can’t imagine any wrist needing the last 3-4 inches of the strap. The leather strap is beautiful and will patina nicely with time.

Thanks for your great review Travis! I wanted to respond to your concerns about the length of the nylon strap.

In fact, they are designed to be extra long so that the wearer may strap it around a bulky jacket, wetsuit or similar. The traditional way to wear the nylon strap on your wrist (as 99.9% of us do) is to fold the extra length back over and through the sewn keepers. Alternatively, you can cut the end of the nylon off to adjust the length to your liking.

I'd be happy to schedule a virtual appointment with you to show you exactly what I mean. I'm also happy to provide links to videos that may help explain the concept better.

    Thanks again!

More beautiful in person. Practically perfect.

I received this as a surprise birthday gift after obsessing over it for the better part of a year, and I just adore it. Some things that impressed me about the watch in person: it's far lighter than I would've expected; the movement of the sweeping seconds hand is butter smooth; the cutout numerals on the white dial have a beautifully subtle effect that doesn't impact legibility at all; and the precision of the cutouts and alignment of design elements are just absolutely spot on. They even set the time for me, so when I put it on my wrist, the time was exactly right — I mean down to the second. Five days later, it's running 5 seconds fast compared to the exact GMT time.

The only slight oddity is that the gap between the links in the bracelet are perhaps a bit larger than I was expecting. But the bracelet is beautiful, light, and extremely comfortable, with an absurd number of micro-adjustment holes.

This watch wears beautifully, and I just find myself staring at it all the time. Chase was really friendly and helpful in the video call we had, and the packaging was top-notch. I couldn't be happier.

    Wonderful

I've been living with it for about a month now, and I still catch myself just staring at it. It really is just a wonderful watch. I had been bouncing between two dive watches prior to this, and I was looking for something that was a bit more versatile - dressy when needed but casual enough for everyday use. This hits the spot, and I'm very happy I made the purchase. There are lots of little details (the orange second hand, the mysterious orange "18") and the sandwich dial makes the numbers change slightly in different lighting conditions. This is my first bracelet (aside from the stock one sent with my Seiko SK007, but I honestly never used it) and it really lives up to the reviews - very comfortable and easy to adjust. If pressed, my only complaint is that the lume is not the brightest I've seen, but that could be because it's the dead of winter, and maybe the sandwich dial tends to shade the lower applied area. But I'm stretching here, and lume has always been more of a gimmicky neat effect than a real functional need for me personally.

I'm a big fan of microbrands, and the fact that O&A is based right here in the USA was a factor for me. I like rotating bezels as much as the next guy, but a lot of microbrands focus too much on tool watches imho. I've never dived in my life and I don't find it hard to remember what time it is back home when I travel. I like that this brand is able to add interest and detail to their designs without resorting to tired tropes.

    Keep up the…

    A stunning timepiece

It took me a while to marinate over the decision between the Navy and Grey dial, but happy that I finally chose the classic Oak & Oscar dial color. I love the size: the short lug-to-lug distance really makes it a perfect watch for folks like me having a slim wrist. It could sometimes be mesmerizing to follow the orange seconds hand making its way around the dial :-) Moreover, the whole experience of becoming an Owner has really been made personal and unique by Chase: he really took the time to patiently answer my questions and clarify my concerns. I believe he's truly an icon among the independent watch brand owners by still investing heavily into keeping Oak & Oscar a friendly and personal watch brand.

On the negative side... Hard to find fault, but if I have to nitpick, I'd add drilled lugs to make it easier to swap straps, and perhaps a quick-change bracelet (like how Baltic's BoR works). Oh, and make the case a bit smaller, like 36 or 37mm, lose the date, yadayadayada, my usual wet dreams about 38-40mm watches :-))

Thank you, Chase, for designing yet another great O&O watch. And I'm looking forward to seeing a no-date 38mm Humboldt ;-)

    Happy Customer

After discovering Oak & Oscar through a friend, I picked The Olmsted 38 with the white face and steel bracelet. I am completely satisfied with the product and the quick shipping - the watch arrived less than 2 days after ordering it.

Great detail, balance, and fit all contribute to my 5 star review.
